Mgahinga Gorilla National Park located in the Kisoro district of southwestern Uganda is one of the country’s prime destinations for tourism and a second hotspot for gorilla trekking to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. As Uganda’s smallest national park, Mgahinga is part of the Virunga volcanic mountain chain shared with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is renowned for its stunning landscapes, which include three notable volcanoes: Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Muhabura. This tropical rainforest features lowland evergreen and montane rainforests, home to diverse wildlife, including the endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
Gorilla trekking is undoubtedly the top luxury activity in Mgahinga National Park. Visitors have the unique opportunity to observe mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The park is home to the Nyakagezi gorilla family, which is habituated for trekking. Only eight visitors are permitted to join each trek, ensuring an intimate experience with these incredible creatures, who share about 99% of human DNA. To participate, trekkers must secure a valid gorilla permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, costing USD 800 for foreign non-residents, USD 700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens.
On the day of the trek, participants gather at the park headquarters for a briefing on guidelines to follow while in the forest. Accompanied by experienced guides and park rangers, trekkers navigate through dense vegetation and up steep inclines to find the gorillas. Once located, trekkers enjoy one hour of close observation, allowing them to witness the gorillas’ social interactions, feeding behaviors, and playful antics. After the trek, participants receive a certificate commemorating their experience.
In addition to gorillas, Mgahinga is famous for its golden monkeys, another rare primate species found only in this park and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. Golden monkey trekking is a thrilling experience where visitors can observe these playful creatures in the wild. The park has two habituated golden monkey communities, and the permit for trekking costs USD 100.
The trek begins early in the morning with a briefing at the park headquarters, followed by a guided hike into the forest. Trekkers can enjoy one hour of viewing the golden monkeys, who are known for their lively nature and distinctive golden fur. This experience is a must for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.
For adventure seekers, climbing the Virunga volcanoes is a highlight of a visit to Mgahinga. The park offers three volcanic peaks to explore: Mount Sabyinyo (3,669m), Mount Gahinga (3,474m), and Mount Muhabura (4,157m). Each mountain presents unique challenges, catering to various fitness levels.
The hike up Mount Sabyinyo typically takes about eight hours for a round trip, featuring a steep ridge that leads to the summit. Mount Gahinga’s hike is slightly shorter at six hours, taking trekkers to a swamp-filled crater. For the most adventurous, Mount Muhabura’s 15km trek also takes around eight hours, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including Lake Edward and the peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains on clear days.
A cultural encounter with the Batwa Pygmies offers an enriching experience, showcasing the traditional lifestyles of the indigenous people who once inhabited the forests of Mgahinga. Although they were displaced to conserve the endangered gorillas, the Batwa share their unique culture through guided tours. Visitors can participate in traditional dances, learn about their ancient hunting methods, and experience their way of life, including fruit gathering and honey collection.
These cultural experiences not only promote cultural appreciation but also contribute to the livelihoods of local communities through fees and donations. Buying souvenirs from Batwa artisans further supports their efforts to sustain their cultural heritage.
Bird watching is another rewarding activity in Mgahinga, with around 79 recorded bird species, including several endemic to the East Congo Montane region. Some notable species include the Dusky Turtle Dove, Cape Robin-chat, and Rwenzori Batis. Birding enthusiasts can explore trails between Mount Sabyinyo and Mount Gahinga, with knowledgeable guides helping to identify various bird calls and sightings.
Additionally, guided nature walks provide an immersive experience in the park’s diverse ecosystems. Trails can be customized based on visitors’ time and interests, allowing exploration of different tree species, lakes, and the rich biodiversity of the park.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is easily accessible from Kigali, Rwanda, with just a four-hour drive through the Chanika border.
