You will embark on a captivating adventure that first takes you to the southern reaches of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, specifically the Rushaga region. Here, you’ll engage in an immersive gorilla habituation experience, unlike any other on the planet. Unlike the conventional one-day gorilla trek, this park is the exclusive provider of the four-hour gorilla habituation encounter. Transitioning from the gorillas, the expedition proceeds to Kibale National Park. This leg of the adventure offers an entire day devoted to chimpanzee habituation. This is an opportunity to be part of the captivating process as these intelligent creatures familiarize themselves with human presence. You will immerse yourself in the distinct worlds of gorillas and chimpanzees, relishing the chance to compare and contrast these two remarkable experiences that Uganda has to offer.

  Day 1: Day 1: Pickup from Entebbe and Drive to Kibale

  Your driver-guide meets you at Entebbe International Airport or your hotel in the morning. After a briefing, you drive west toward Kibale National Park, a journey of about 5 to 6 hours with stops for lunch and the Equator crossing along the way. You pass rolling hills, tea plantations and small trading towns. You arrive at your lodge in the afternoon, with time to relax and prepare for the following day. Dinner and overnight near Kibale.

  Day 2: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale, Optional Bigodi Wetland Walk

  After an early breakfast, you join the researchers and trackers at the park for a briefing, then enter the forest. Kibale is home to roughly 1,500 chimpanzees and has one of the highest primate densities in Africa. Unlike regular chimp trekking, which lasts about an hour with the animals, the habituation experience lets you stay with the chimpanzees for up to four hours, observing feeding, grooming, play and social interactions as they are gradually accustomed to people. You may also see red colobus, black-and-white colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys and many bird species.

  Return to your lodge for lunch and a rest. In the afternoon, you can take the optional Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk, a community-run guided walk through swamp and forest edge with good chances of seeing birds and monkeys, including the great blue turaco. The walk supports local community projects. Dinner and overnight near Kibale.

  Day 3: Kibale to Bwindi (Rushaga Sector)

  After breakfast, drive south toward Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a long but scenic day of about 6 to 8 hours. The route passes through the Kichwamba escarpment, the Queen Elizabeth region and the terraced hills of southwestern Uganda. If you travel via Ishasha, you may have a chance to spot the famous tree-climbing lions. Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon, settle in and rest ahead of the gorilla activity. Dinner and overnight near Bwindi.

  Day 4: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale National Park

  Gorilla habituation is offered only in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi, so plan your accommodation accordingly. After an early breakfast, you meet your guides at the park headquarters for a briefing. You then trek into the forest with trackers and researchers to find a gorilla family that is still being habituated. Once located, you spend up to four hours with the gorillas, far longer than the one hour allowed on a standard trek. This is an immersive way to observe their behaviour, family dynamics and daily routines. Trekking can be challenging, with steep, muddy and dense terrain, so good fitness and sturdy boots are recommended. Return to your lodge for a hot meal and rest. Dinner and overnight near Bwindi.

  Day 5:Departure from Bwindi to Entebbe or Kigali

  After breakfast, you choose between two departure options.

  Option A: Bwindi to Entebbe. Drive back to Entebbe, roughly 8 to 10 hours, with lunch en route. Arrive in the evening for your onward flight or hotel. Alternatively, you can take a domestic flight from Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip to Entebbe at extra cost, which saves considerable time.

  Option B: Bwindi to Kigali. Drive from Rushaga through the Cyanika border into Rwanda and on to Kigali, roughly 4 to 6 hours including border formalities. You arrive in Kigali in the afternoon, in time for onward travel or a hotel stay. Carry valid passports and any required visas or East Africa Tourist Visa documentation.
