Once you arrive in Rwanda, your adventure starts with a drive to Volcanoes National Park, where you will meet the gorillas.
The journey from Kigali International Airport to Volcanoes National Park is straightforward and takes about 2.5 to 3 hours by road. The park is approximately 116 kilometers from the capital city. The drive is scenic and offers views of Rwanda’s famous rolling hills, local villages, and farmlands. If you prefer, you can have an overnight in Kigali City and start your journey to the park the following morning. The roads in Rwanda are in excellent condition, making the trip safe and comfortable.

Gorilla trekking starts early in the morning. It is important to be well-prepared. Here’s how to get ready for your trek:
Wake Up Early: Be up by 5:00 AM to get ready.
Eat Breakfast: Fuel your body for the long trek ahead.
Wear Proper Gear: Dress in long-sleeved shirts and trousers. Wear waterproof hiking boots and a rain jacket (it might rain). Gloves will protect your hands from scratches.
Pack Essentials: Bring a small backpack, drinking water, snacks, a camera (no flash), and a walking stick (provided at the park).
By 7:00 AM, you should be at the park headquarters in Kinigi for a briefing. This will cover the rules and the group allocations for trekking.
Once the briefing is over, you will be assigned to a small group of no more than eight people. Each group visits a different gorilla family. Professional guides and armed rangers will accompany you for safety. The trek duration varies from 30 minutes to 6 hours, depending on where the gorillas are on that day.
You will pass through bamboo forests, thick vegetation, and steep slopes. When you finally find the gorillas, you’ll have one hour to observe them. During this time, you can watch them feed, play, groom, and relax. Some young gorillas might even approach you out of curiosity!
This encounter with the gorillas is peaceful and moving. The experience of seeing these gentle creatures up close is a rare opportunity. After the hour with the gorillas, you will return to the park headquarters, where you will receive a certificate.

Gorilla trekking is possible year-round in Rwanda. However, the best times to visit are during the dry seasons:
June to September: This is the peak dry season. The weather is pleasant, and the trails are easier to hike.
December to February: This short dry season offers clear views and warm days.
The rainy seasons (March-May and October-November) are more challenging due to slippery, muddy trails. However, this is also a good time for budget travelers, as many lodges offer discounts. The park is also less crowded during these months.
