To trek gorillas here, you’ll need a permit, which costs $800 for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens.

After an adventurous day with the gorillas, you’ll unwind at Lake Bunyonyi – known for its tranquil atmosphere and lovely islands. A refreshing swim in the lake provides a perfect end to your trip before heading back to Entebbe.

Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your adventure starts with a pickup by an Iconic Africa Safaris driver-guide, setting off on your 3-day journey to Bwindi. The drive will take you southwest, crossing the Equator and passing through the beautiful savannahs of Mbarara, where you’ll stop for lunch. As you head through the scenic Kigezi Highlands, often called the “Switzerland of Uganda,” you’ll pass terraced hills and banana plantations, finally arriving at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Upon arrival, you’ll check into your lodge, where you can relax and prepare for the thrilling gorilla trekking experience the following day.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Lake Bunyonyi

After an early breakfast, you’ll head to the ranger station for a briefing before entering the dense, green sanctuary of Bwindi. The rainforest offers a dramatic, lush landscape filled with wildlife trails, making it possible to track and observe these magnificent animals in their natural habitat.

Your time with the gorillas will be unforgettable, allowing you to watch and experience their interactions up close for one full hour. The encounter with these gentle giants is an experience you’ll cherish forever.

After your trek, you’ll return to the lodge for lunch, then check out and head to Lake Bunyonyi. This lake, surrounded by green terraced hills and 29 islands, is one of Uganda’s most scenic spots and offers a peaceful place to relax after the trek.

Day 3: Return to Kampala/Entebbe

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at Lake Bunyonyi. You may opt for a refreshing swim before departing on your return journey to Entebbe. Along the way, you’ll stop in Mbarara town for lunch and have an opportunity to visit the Uganda Equator in Kayabwe. Here, you can take memorable photos or shop for unique souvenirs.

You’ll arrive in Entebbe in the late afternoon or evening. If you have a flight scheduled, we recommend planning a late afternoon or evening departure to ensure ample time.

Best Time to Trek Gorillas

The best times to visit Bwindi for gorilla trekking are during the dry seasons, from June to August and December to February. Trails are usually dry and easier to navigate, making trekking more comfortable. The rainy seasons, from March to May and September to November, can be challenging due to muddy trails but are great for birdwatching as many migratory birds come to the park during these months.
