The Rwenzori Mountains, called the “Mountains of the Moon” by early travelers, are famous for their stunning beauty often shrouded in mist. They have a spooky, inviting quality that inspired many fascinating stories over time. The area’s icy glaciers, cascading waterfalls, and lakes make it one of Africa’s prettiest mountain regions.
Rwenzori is mostly known for its tough hiking among the East African Mountains. These mountains aren’t made from volcanoes but rise straight from the valley floor of the Albertine Rift. The range is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to a rich variety of animals, including mammals and around 177 bird species, with some found only in the Albertine Rift.
It’s Africa’s tallest mountain range, with its highest peaks, Margherita (5,109m) and Alexandra (5,083m) on Mount Stanley, exceeded in height only by Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya elsewhere in Africa.
On this journey, you’ll hike Mount Stanley to reach the highest summit, Margherita Peak (5,109 meters, 16,762 feet), in the Rwenzori Mountains. This safari hiking trip isn’t for the faint-hearted, so be ready to witness African beauty from high above. Trekking through this mysterious land, often covered in clouds, occasionally lit by sunlight, is an amazing experience. It’s much tougher to reach than Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya – the slopes are steep and often slippery due to the wet conditions. It’s definitely hard work and not for everyone, but something most travelers to this area don’t get to experience: the marvels of high glaciers, dense jungle-like slopes, enormous plants alongside rushing rivers, breathtaking waterfalls, and diverse vegetation.
We will process the trekking permits on your behalf from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
