Muhavura Volcano Hike Experience – 3 Days
The Muhavura Volcano Hike is a 3-day adventure trip. You’ll climb Muhavura Volcano, one of eight volcanic mountains in the Virunga Mountain ranges. The volcano stands tall at 4,127 meters above sea level. The hike takes about 4-5 hours, so it’s best to start in the morning. You need to be fit for this hike, but it’s worth it. Along the way, you might see various primates like Golden monkeys, and if you’re lucky, even mountain Gorillas and other wild animals. This trip starts and ends in Entebbe/Kampala but can be customized to end in Kigali or start and end there.

DAY 01: Journey to Kisoro
On Day 1, you’ll be picked up from your hotel or the airport in Kampala or Entebbe. Then, you’ll start your drive to Kisoro, a town near Muhavura Volcano. This journey will take around 8 to 9 hours. Along the way, you’ll stop to visit the Equator and have lunch. Finally, you’ll head south to Kisoro, where you’ll arrive in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 02: Exploring Muhavura Volcano
Day 2 begins with an early breakfast at your lodge. Then, you’ll drive to the headquarters of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for a briefing. Knowledgeable guides will be assigned to accompany you on your hike up Muhavura Volcano. The hike itself will take about 4 to 5 hours to reach the summit and return. You’ll have breaks along the way to rest. Once at the top, you can enjoy the stunning views before descending back to the starting point. Afterwards, you’ll return to the lodge to relax, have dinner, and spend the night. Depending on your timing and energy, you might also visit the local Batwa community for a cultural experience.

DAY 03: Return to Kampala/Entebbe
On the final day, you’ll have breakfast at the lodge before beginning your journey back to Entebbe or Kampala. This marks the end of your 3-day Muhavura Volcano hike. If you prefer, you can also choose to end the trip in Kigali. In that case, you have the option to do a morning Gorilla trek or Golden monkey trek in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park before heading to Kigali for drop-off, either to catch your flight or to be dropped off at your lodge.
