Combining the chimpanzee habituation experience in Kibale Forest National Park with the golden monkey habituation experience in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers a unique safari for those who want to spend more time with Uganda’s fascinating primates. This kind of safari is perfect for travelers who are keen to learn more about the daily lives, behaviors, and survival skills of both chimpanzees and golden monkeys. These habituation experiences allow visitors to see the primates in their natural environment as they go about their day-to-day lives. Spending extended time with these animals creates lasting memories and gives valuable insights into their world.
Located in mid-western Uganda, Kibale Forest National Park is one of the best places to see primates, especially chimpanzees. The park is famous for its diversity of primates, boasting an impressive 12 species, making it one of the highest primate density areas in the world. In Kibale, you will have the chance to see chimpanzees and other species like the red colobus monkeys swinging from tree to tree.
Chimpanzee habituation is a special activity where you follow a team of researchers to observe chimpanzees as they get used to human presence. It allows for an in-depth look at the chimpanzees’ daily routines, such as hunting, feeding, playing, and resting. Unlike regular chimpanzee trekking, the habituation experience offers more time with the chimps, enabling you to study their behavior in detail.
While most people visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for gorilla trekking, the park also offers an exclusive opportunity to see golden monkeys. This is the only place in Uganda where you can enjoy both golden monkey trekking and the unique golden monkey habituation experience. During the habituation process, researchers help these playful primates become more accustomed to human presence without altering their natural behaviors.
Like gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking allows you to spend time with these primates in their natural forest habitat. The habituation process is different from regular trekking because it gives you more time to observe the monkeys’ activities. You get to see them play, patrol their territory, and interact with one another.
Upon arrival in Uganda, either at Entebbe International Airport or from a location in Kampala, you will be picked up by your guide and set off on a journey to Kibale Forest National Park in western Uganda. The drive takes about 5-6 hours through the scenic countryside. Along the way, you will pass beautiful rolling hills, local homesteads, and tea plantations.
Once you arrive at Kibale Forest National Park in the afternoon, you will check into your lodge for a short rest. Later, you may go for a guided walk in a nearby forest swamp, where you can see several species of primates like the black-and-white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabeys. Birdwatchers can also expect to see a variety of bird species, such as the yellow-spotted nicator and the great blue turaco. You can also visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community project located on the edge of Kibale Forest.
This is the day you will spend with the chimpanzees. You will join researchers early in the morning, arriving in the forest just before dawn to see the chimpanzees leaving their nests at around 6:00-6:30 am. From that point, you will follow them throughout their day, observing as they hunt for food, rest, play, and engage in social interactions.
The chimpanzee habituation experience is unlike a regular trek because it offers an unhurried exploration of the chimpanzees’ world. You will have time to watch and learn about their complex behavior and the efforts researchers make to get them accustomed to humans without disturbing their natural instincts.
The day will end when the chimpanzees begin building new nests for the night around 7:00 pm. This incredible experience offers a deeper understanding of the chimpanzees and the challenges faced by researchers.
After breakfast, you will leave Kibale and drive to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in southwestern Uganda. The drive will take about 6-7 hours, passing through beautiful landscapes and giving you opportunities to take photos of the stunning scenery. You will arrive at Mgahinga in the late afternoon or evening. Depending on your arrival time, you can either relax at your lodge or take a community walk to learn about the local culture.
Early in the morning, you will head to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for the golden monkey habituation experience. You will arrive at the forest at dawn, around 6:00-6:30 am, to catch the golden monkeys as they start their day. You will watch them come out of their nests, stretch, and interact with one another.
Throughout the day, you will observe the golden monkeys as they move through the forest, communicate with each other, feed, and care for their young. The researchers will explain how they help the monkeys get used to human presence and share interesting details about the monkeys’ behavior, diet, and communication methods.
This experience also provides a chance to learn more about the forest ecosystem, the plant species found there, and other animals that inhabit the forest.
After a relaxed breakfast, you will set off on your journey back to Kampala. On the way, you will have a stop at the Equator, where you can take photos and enjoy the unique opportunity to stand in both the northern and southern hemispheres at the same time. You will arrive in Kampala in the late afternoon, where you will either be transferred to the airport for your departure flight or to a hotel for the night.
