To secure your spot and avoid disappointment, it is recommended to book your gorilla permit at least six to nine months in advance. Permits can even be booked up to two years ahead, providing peace of mind and eliminating last-minute panic.
Where to obtain Rwanda Gorilla Permits
Gorilla trekking permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and can be acquired either directly from the RDB or through a registered tour company. While both options are available, booking through a tour operator is often more efficient and less tiring. Tour operators can also assist in organizing the entire safari experience, including accommodations, transportation, and expert guidance during the trek.

Gorilla Trekking Destinations in Rwanda
The primary destination for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is Volcanoes National Park. Currently, the permit costs are $1500 for foreign non-residents, $500 for African citizens, and $300 for East African citizens (Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Burundi). The Rwanda Development Board has the exclusive right to grant discounts on permits, which we will discuss in detail later.

Once confirmed, the tour company will check permit availability and request payment. The permit will only be purchased upon receiving full payment, and a scanned copy will be sent to you. The physical permit will be provided upon your arrival in Rwanda and is unique to the individual named on the permit.
