- Permit Fees: The biggest expense is usually the gorilla trekking permit. As of 2024 to 2026, these permits cost $800 for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents in East Africa, $500 for the rest of Africa, 300,000 Uganda shillings for citizens in East Africa, and a significantly lower cost for Ugandan citizens.

Once you’ve confirmed your travel dates, you’ll need to email us at info@iconicafricasafaris.com to check the availability of gorilla habituation permits with the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Once we confirm permits are available for your dates, we’ll send you an invoice for payment. After receiving your payment, we’ll immediately purchase your permits and send you a scanned copy for your records. It’s best to book your permits at least 2-3 months in advance, as they sell out quickly on a first-come, first-served basis.
Age Limit for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
If you want to go gorilla trekking in Bwindi, you need to be at least 12 years old. But there’s no maximum age limit. It just depends on how fit you are. Even if you’re older and not able to walk well, you can still go gorilla trekking. There are sedan chair carriers available in Bwindi forest. These chairs are carried by people called potters. They will carry you into and out of the forest during your trek. You can hire the sedan chair in advance or on the day of the trek. It costs between $400 and $500.
Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi can be done all year round. But the best time is during the drier months. These are January, February, June, and early September. It’s easier to travel to the park during these months. Also, the vegetation isn’t too thick, so you can see the gorillas more clearly.
How to Get to Bwindi Forest National Park
If you’re coming by road, you can reach the southern sector of Bwindi Forest National Park from Entebbe or Kampala. It’s about an 8-9 hour drive. Once you reach Muko along the Kabale-Kisoro road, you’ll see a signpost for the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Follow that to your booked lodge for accommodation in Rushaga or Nkuringo sector.
If you’re coming by air, you can fly from Entebbe International Airport or Kampala’s Kajjansi airfield to Kisoro airstrip. This will give you access to the southern sectors of Rushaga and Nkuringo. Scheduled and chartered flights are available from domestic airline operators like Aero link and Fly Uganda. You’ll need to arrange a transfer from the airstrip to the park with your tour operator.
