Gorilla trekking in Uganda requires a permit, and sometimes travelers need to reschedule. Understanding the rules helps avoid inconveniences. Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) allows changes in dates or locations under specific conditions. Travelers should know the guidelines before requesting modifications. A traveler can reschedule a permit twice for the same booking. However, UWA does not allow a third reschedule. Each reschedule depends on availability at the requested location and date. The first reschedule is free if space is available. The second reschedule attracts a 25% surcharge based on the permit’s total cost.
When rescheduling twice, the new trekking date must not go beyond twelve months from the original date. If a traveler has already rescheduled, no refund will be given. A permit rescheduled to a higher-priced period requires an additional payment. The amount depends on the price difference at the time of rescheduling.
Travelers should send reschedule requests at least 14 days before the trekking date. Requests sent later than 14 days may still be accepted, depending on space. However, such late requests will require a 25% surcharge. Permits obtained through promotions or complimentary offers cannot be rescheduled. If not used on the booked date, they will be forfeited.
Commission-based permits can be rescheduled, but only within one year from the quarter when issued. All other reschedule rules apply, including the surcharge for a second change. Rescheduled permits must remain within the same conservation area. Travelers cannot change the activity type when rescheduling.
Choosing the Right Time for Gorilla Trekking
Uganda has two dry seasons, from June to August and December to February. These months provide better trekking conditions with minimal rainfall. Trails are less slippery, making hiking easier. Wildlife sightings also improve during dry months.
Rainy seasons occur from March to May and September to November. Trekking remains possible, but trails become muddy and challenging. However, permits may be more available, and the forests look greener. Some travelers prefer this period due to fewer crowds and lower accommodation prices.
