While the main attractions are the mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, the safari also offers opportunities to capture a diverse array of wildlife and bird species in different habitats across Uganda. Our journey includes visits to two remarkable destinations: Kibale Forest National Park, known for its vibrant chimpanzee populations, and either Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda or Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, both renowned for their populations of endangered mountain gorillas.

Gorilla Trekking: A Physical and Photographic Challenge

Gorilla trekking is undoubtedly the pinnacle of this safari experience. To photograph the endangered mountain gorillas up close, you must be prepared for a moderate physical challenge. The trekking paths can vary from relatively flat terrain to rugged, hilly jungle landscapes. Depending on the location and gorilla group, treks can range from 2 to 6 hours in duration. However, the physical effort is richly rewarded when you encounter a gorilla family and have the opportunity to capture their majestic presence.

As you trek through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Volcanoes National Park, you have to maintain a respectful distance from the gorillas and do not use flash photography to minimize disturbance. Yet, the inquisitive nature of these magnificent creatures often leads them to approach our group, providing extraordinary photographic opportunities. Recommended Equipment

1. DSLR or mirrorless camera: Choose a camera that allows you to take creative control of settings for the best results.
2. Range of lenses: Bring a selection of lenses to adapt to different photography situations. While you may get up close to certain wildlife, such as gorillas, you may also need to photograph from a distance during hikes.
3. Tripod or bean bag: Stabilize your camera for long exposures or low-light conditions.
4. Sturdy camera bag: Ensure your camera gear is protected, preferably in a waterproof bag or one with a removable rain cover.
5. Spare memory cards and camera batteries: Always have backups to avoid missing crucial shots.
6. Camera battery charger: Keep your camera powered throughout your adventure.
7. Waterproof cover for your camera and lens: Protect your gear from unexpected rain showers in the jungle.
8. Laptop with a memory card reader: If you wish to enhance your post-production skills or review your images, a laptop is a valuable tool for image management and backup storage.

It’s essential to note that flash photography is prohibited when photographing gorillas to minimize disturbance. Flash must be switched off entirely during these encounters. Additionally, tripods and monopods are not allowed during gorilla treks to prevent any potential distress to the gorillas, who may associate them with poachers’ tools.
