This 4-Day Gorilla and Golden Monkey Safari takes you on an unforgettable journey through the heart of East Africa, offering a unique opportunity to trek gorillas and encounter golden monkeys in their natural habitats. Starting in Kigali, Rwanda, this adventure allows you to cross into Uganda, where you’ll explore the wonders of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park. The itinerary is designed for those who wish to experience the beauty of these endangered species without the long travel times typically associated with such excursions.
Your adventure begins the moment you arrive in Kigali, Rwanda. Upon landing at Kigali International Airport, or if you’re already in Kigali, you’ll be greeted by your safari guide. This friendly and knowledgeable guide will be with you throughout your journey, ensuring that everything runs smoothly.
After meeting your guide, you’ll embark on a scenic drive from Kigali to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. The journey takes about 4 to 5 hours, which is significantly shorter than the 8 to 9-hour drive from Entebbe International Airport to Bwindi. Along the way, you’ll cross the border into Uganda via either the Cyanika or Katuna border posts.
As you drive, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Kigezi Highlands, also known as the “Switzerland of Africa.” The landscape here is characterized by rolling hills, lush valleys, and picturesque villages. These sights provide a perfect introduction to the natural beauty that awaits you in Bwindi.
Upon arriving at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, you’ll check into your lodge for the night. You’ll stay at either Bakiga Lodge or Rushaga Gorilla Havens Lodge, both of which offer comfortable accommodations with stunning views of the surrounding forest.
Meals: Lunch and dinner are included.
Drive time: 4-5 hours.
Day two is the highlight of your safari – the day you’ll trek to see the majestic mountain gorillas. After an early breakfast at your lodge, you’ll head to the park headquarters for a briefing. The park rangers will provide important information about gorilla trekking, including the dos and don’ts, safety guidelines, and what to expect during your trek.
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The park is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, and your trek will take you deep into the dense forest to find one of the habituated gorilla families. The trek can be challenging, as it involves navigating steep and sometimes muddy terrain, but the reward is worth every effort.
When you finally come face-to-face with the gorillas, you’ll be allowed to spend up to one hour observing them. During this time, you can take photographs and watch as these incredible animals interact with each other. The experience is both humbling and awe-inspiring, offering a unique glimpse into the lives of one of the world’s most endangered species.
After your gorilla trek, you’ll return to the park headquarters where you’ll receive a certificate as a memento of your adventure. You’ll then transfer to Mgahinga National Park, a short drive from Bwindi, where you’ll spend the night.
Your accommodations for the night will be at either Lake Chahafi Resort or Kisoro Travelers Inn, both of which provide a comfortable place to relax after a day of trekking.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.
Day three of your safari is dedicated to tracking the beautiful and endangered golden monkeys. After breakfast, you’ll head to Mgahinga National Park, where you’ll begin your golden monkey trek.
Golden monkeys are unique to the Virunga Mountains, and Mgahinga is one of the few places where you can see them in the wild. The park’s bamboo forests provide the perfect habitat for these colorful primates. The trek is generally less strenuous than gorilla trekking, making it a more relaxed experience.
As you walk through the forest, your guide will share fascinating insights about the golden monkeys and the other wildlife that inhabits the park. You’ll likely see other primates, birds, and perhaps even signs of larger animals like buffalo or elephants.
When you finally spot the golden monkeys, you’ll be captivated by their striking appearance. They have a golden-orange coat with black limbs, and their playful behavior is a joy to watch. You’ll spend about an hour observing these beautiful creatures before heading back to the park headquarters.
After the trek, you’ll return to your lodge for some rest and relaxation. The evening is yours to enjoy at your leisure, perhaps reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past few days.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.
Drive time: 45 minutes to 1 hour.
On the final day of your safari, you’ll enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your lodge before beginning the drive back to Kigali. This is your last chance to soak in the stunning landscapes of Uganda and Rwanda as you travel through the countryside.
Upon arrival in Kigali, your guide will transfer you to the airport for your departure flight, or to your hotel if you’re extending your stay in Rwanda. This marks the end of your 4-day Gorilla and Golden Monkey Safari from Kigali, but the memories of your adventure will stay with you for a lifetime.
