Kahuzi-Biega National Park

Kahuzi Biega National Park is in the southern province of Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s known for two dormant volcanoes, Kahuzi and Biega, with altitudes of 3,308 meters and 2,790 meters. The park has a diverse landscape, from the Mitumba Mountain range to lowlands. With an annual rainfall of 1,800 mm and temperatures ranging from 18 to 10.4 degrees Celsius, it’s an important area for birds, with 349 species, including 42 endemics.

The park’s unique feature is its eastern lowland gorillas, the largest of their kind. With about 250 individuals, it’s the highest population in Congo. The gorillas, also known as Grauer’s gorillas, are mainly found in the park. Visitors can track them in their natural habitat, starting at 7 am with a briefing. The trek, which costs USD 400, can last between 4 to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location. Habituated gorillas make the experience remarkable, though it can be physically demanding.

The park’s landscape includes swamp and bog vegetation, marshland, and riparian forests. A corridor links the highland to the lowland section. Eastern lowland gorillas mainly feed on fruit and bamboo shoots. The trek offers a unique opportunity to witness these majestic creatures in their natural environment. While the experience is rewarding, it requires physical and mental readiness, as tracking can take longer hours, especially if the gorillas have moved deep into the forest in search of food.
