Lake Bunyonyi is a beautiful place in south western Uganda in Kabale District where you can enjoy cultural experiences and meet local communities. One of the most special experiences here is visiting the villages on the islands or the countryside especially the Batwa pygmy people. The Batwa are known as the original people of the forest, but today they struggle to survive away from their beloved trees.
When you visit, you can take part in interactive cultural visits. You might stay in a local home and visit nearby schools and markets. This is a great chance to learn about traditional cooking and farming. You will discover how to grow crops, harvest them, and even dig in the gardens alongside the villagers.
Lake Bunyonyi has many islands, each with its own stories. One notable island is Akampene, often called Punishment Island. This island was used by the Bakiga people to send unmarried pregnant girls as a punishment. They were left to die of hunger or swim back to the mainland. This harsh practice was meant to warn others not to make the same mistake. In the past, men without cows to pay the bride price could come to the island and pick up a girl.
Another important island is Bwama, along with its neighbor Njuyeera, known as Sharp Island. In 1921, an English missionary named Leonard Sharp came to this area and started a leprosy treatment center on Bwama Island in 1931. He built a church, a medical facility, and housing for patients. Sharp lived on Njuyeera Island, which means “white cottage,” named after his small white house, which looked like his father’s house back in England. The leprosy colony was meant to be a safe community for those affected, keeping them away from others to prevent the spread of the disease.
The Pygmy tribe lives on the opposite side of the lake. When you visit them, they will greet you with a welcome dance. You will also see the chief’s hut and the village school. The Pygmy people originally lived in Rwanda but moved when their hunting of gorillas led to the animals becoming endangered. Unfortunately, they lack support for education and healthcare. They often do not value formal schooling because they see no benefits in it.
