Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga

Gorilla trekking is the top reason most people visit Mgahinga. The park is home to a habituated gorilla family (Nyakagezi) that you can track on foot through the forest. The trek can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are that day. Once you find them, you get one full hour to watch them eat, play, and move around in their natural home.

Seeing a mountain gorilla up close is a life-changing experience. These animals are massive, calm, and deeply human in the way they behave. You will see mothers nursing babies, young gorillas wrestling, and silverbacks resting while keeping a watchful eye on the group. No two treks are ever the same, and that is what makes it so special.

Golden Monkey Trekking in Mgahinga

Golden monkeys are found nowhere else in the world except the Virunga Mountains, which is exactly where Mgahinga sits. These bright, playful primates move quickly through the bamboo forest and are an absolute joy to watch.

You have two options when it comes to golden monkeys. The first is standard golden monkey trekking, which gives you one hour with a habituated group. The second is golden monkey habituation, which lets you spend up to four hours with a group that is still getting used to human presence. Habituation is a rarer and more personal experience, and it is perfect for photography or anyone who simply wants more time in the forest.

Hiking Mount Sabyinyo or Mount Muhavura

Mgahinga sits at the base of three volcanoes — Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhavura, and Mount Sabyinyo. All three can be hiked, and each one offers something different.

Mount Sabyinyo is the most exciting because the summit sits on the border of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. You can stand in three countries at the same time. The hike is challenging but the reward is worth every step.

Mount Muhavura is the tallest of the three at 4,127 metres. It is a long and steep climb, but the views from the top stretch across the entire Virunga landscape. On a clear day, you can even see Lake Edward to the north.

Batwa Cultural Experience

The Batwa people are the original forest dwellers of the Bwindi and Mgahinga forests. They lived in the forest for thousands of years before conservation laws required them to leave. Today, the Batwa offer guided cultural experiences where they share their history, traditions, and ancient forest knowledge with visitors.

You will learn how they hunted, gathered plants for medicine, started fire without matches, and communicated in the forest. It is a humbling and deeply moving experience. Many visitors say the Batwa experience stays with them just as much as the gorilla trek.

Lake Kivu Beach Relaxation

After the excitement of the forest, Lake Kivu offers the perfect place to slow down. Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s Great Lakes, sitting on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The town of Rubavu, also known as Gisenyi, sits right on the lakeshore and is the best base for beach relaxation after a Mgahinga safari.

The lake is clean, calm, and surrounded by green hills. It does not have the crowds or commercialisation of beach destinations in other parts of the world. Instead, it has a quiet, natural beauty that feels very African.

At Lake Kivu you can go kayaking on calm waters, swim in the lake, or take a boat cruise to nearby islands. The sunset over the water is truly beautiful, and the fresh fish served at lakeside restaurants is some of the best food you will eat on the entire trip. It is a wonderful place to rest your legs after days of hiking and trekking.

Suggested 5-Day Travel Plan

Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Mgahinga

You will be picked up from either Entebbe International Airport in Uganda, which is a 9 to 10 hour drive to Mgahinga, or from Kigali International Airport in Rwanda, which is a shorter 4 to 5 hour drive. You will be transferred directly to your lodge near Mgahinga for dinner and rest.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Optional Batwa Experience

You will head into the forest in the morning for gorilla trekking. After lunch and a rest at the lodge, you can optionally join a Batwa cultural experience in the evening for a different kind of adventure.

Day 3: Golden Monkeys and Transfer to Lake Kivu

After breakfast, you will go golden monkey trekking or opt for the longer habituation experience. In the afternoon, you will cross the Chanika Border into Rwanda and drive to Lake Kivu, arriving in time for dinner by the water.

Day 4: Full Day at Lake Kivu

This is your rest day. Enjoy kayaking, swimming, or a relaxed boat cruise on the lake. Take your time at the beach, explore the town of Rubavu, or simply sit back and enjoy the view.

Day 5: Kigali City Tour and Departure

You will be transferred to Kigali for a half-day city tour before departure. The tour usually includes a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a walk through Kimironko Market, and a stop at one of the city’s well-known art centres such as Inema Arts Center or Niyo Art Gallery. You will then be dropped at Kigali International Airport for your flight home.

Best Time to Go

Mgahinga and Lake Kivu are open for visitors throughout the whole year. However, the dry seasons make travel easier and more comfortable. The best months are June to October and December to February. During these months, the forest trails are less muddy, making gorilla and golden monkey trekking much easier on foot. The skies are also clearer, giving you better views from the volcano summits.

The rainy months of April, May, and November are quieter and come with lower permit prices, which can save you a significant amount of money. The forest is also very green and lush during this time, which is beautiful for photography.

Who Can Join This Adventure?

Adults aged 15 years and above can take part in gorilla trekking. This is the age limit set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority for all gorilla trekking activities in Uganda. Golden monkey trekking has a slightly lower minimum age of 12 years. There is no age limit for the Lake Kivu beach activities.

Families travelling with younger children are still welcome on this trip. Children who do not meet the age requirements for trekking will stay at the lodge with a guide or lodge staff and take part in alternative activities while the adults go into the forest.
