A 7-Day Rwanda Safari brings together three of the country’s finest wildlife experiences in one journey. Start with lions, elephants, rhinos and hippos in Akagera National Park. Continue to Nyungwe’s ancient rainforest to track chimpanzees. Finish in Volcanoes National Park with the encounter most travelers come to Rwanda for: trekking to see endangered mountain gorillas.
This itinerary is for travelers who want more than a short gorilla trip. In one week you experience savannah, wetlands, montane rainforest and volcanic mountains, with private guiding and a route designed so the trip builds to its high point.

Most 7-day Rwanda itineraries run north to south, starting with gorillas. We run it the other way, for four practical reasons:
One honest note: this route includes two long driving days (Days 3 and 5), because Rwanda’s parks sit in the east, southwest and northwest. Early starts and scenic stops make them comfortable, but they are the trade-off for seeing all three parks in a week.
Our 7-day route: savannah wildlife in Akagera, chimps in Nyungwe, then gorillas in Volcanoes National Park.

Your safari begins in Kigali, where you meet your driver-guide and head east toward Akagera National Park, about two to three hours away depending on the entrance used and your lodge location.
The scenery changes as you travel. Hills and farmland gradually open into the wetlands, woodland and savannah that define Akagera. After checking in and having lunch, you head out on an afternoon game drive, when many animals become more active in the cooler light.

This is a full day of wildlife. Start with an early-morning game drive, when predators and other animals are most active. Your guide searches the savannah and woodland for elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, antelope, hyenas and, with good fortune, lions, rhinos and leopards.
Sightings are never guaranteed, and leopards in particular are elusive. Akagera’s recovery, however, is one of Africa’s notable conservation success stories, and it is now Rwanda’s principal Big Five destination.
In the afternoon, take a boat safari on Lake Ihema. From the water you can watch hippos, look for crocodiles along the shore and see large numbers of waterbirds. It is also a favorite with photographers because of the late-afternoon light.

This is a long transfer day, so you leave early after breakfast. The drive from Akagera to the Nyungwe area typically takes seven to eight hours with stops, depending on the route and traffic.
The journey shows you everyday Rwanda that national parks alone cannot: small towns, farms, tea estates and rolling hills. Your guide plans comfort and lunch stops, and a short cultural stop is possible if timing allows.
You arrive in the Nyungwe area in the evening, check in and rest, since chimpanzee trekking begins early tomorrow.
![]()
Chimpanzee trekking starts very early, typically around 5:30 a.m., because chimpanzees are most active in the morning. Trackers follow signs and calls to locate the community. Depending on where the chimpanzees are, the trek can last from about an hour to several hours.
Unlike gorillas, chimpanzees move fast and spend much of their time in the trees. You will often hear them before you see them, with loud calls echoing through the forest. Once found, you spend a limited time watching them feed, climb and interact.
After lunch and a rest, walk the Nyungwe Canopy Walkway if conditions and timing allow. Suspended above the forest, it offers a very different view of the rainforest and surrounding valleys. Nyungwe is also excellent for monkeys, birds and butterflies.

Today you travel from the southwestern rainforest to the northern volcanoes. The drive typically takes six to seven hours with stops, and the route along Lake Kivu is among Rwanda’s most scenic roads.
Your guide can arrange lunch and photo stops along the lake. Arrive in the Musanze and Kinigi area in the late afternoon, check in and prepare for tomorrow’s trek.
If you arrive early enough, you can add an optional cultural experience such as a visit to the Gorilla Guardians community.
Overnight: Volcanoes National Park area

After an early breakfast, you travel to the park headquarters for a briefing and the assignment of your gorilla family. The trek depends on where your family is that day. You may walk through farmland, bamboo forest and thick vegetation on steep, muddy terrain while trackers search for the group.
Then you find them. A young gorilla may be playing nearby, a mother may be nursing her infant, and a powerful silverback may watch calmly from the vegetation. You spend a limited time with the family, following park rules designed to protect them.
Return to your lodge for lunch and a well-earned rest.
Overnight: Volcanoes National Park area Main activity: Mountain gorilla trekking

After breakfast, drive back to Kigali in about two to two and a half hours. If your flight is later in the day, you can include a short Kigali experience such as a craft market, art gallery or memorial visit, depending on timing. You are then transferred to Kigali International Airport.
We match your lodges to your budget and the dates of your gorilla and chimpanzee permits. The properties below are the ones we most often use in each park. Final choices depend on availability for your dates.
| Park | Budget | Mid-Range | Luxury | Ultra-Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Akagera | Rutete Eco Lodge | Akagera Game Lodge, Akagera Rhino Lodge | Ruzizi Tented Lodge, Akagera Wilderness | On request |
| Nyungwe | Chimpanze Lodge, Nyungwe Nziza Eco Lodge | Nyungwe Top Hill View Hotel, Munazi Eco-Lodge | On request | One&Only Nyungwe House |
| Volcanoes | Kinigi Guest House, Muhabura Hotel, La Palme Hotel | Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge, Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge, Tiloreza Volcanoes Eco Lodge | Amakoro Songa Lodge, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, Virunga Lodge | Singita Kwitonda Lodge, Bisate Lodge |
Mix and match: You do not have to stay in one category throughout. Many travelers choose mid-range lodges in Akagera and Nyungwe, then splurge on a luxury or ultra-luxury lodge near the gorillas.
Cost depends mainly on accommodation level, number of travelers, season, permits and optional activities. A private mid-range safari for two will cost considerably less per person than a luxury itinerary with premium lodges.
| Safari Category | Approximate Cost |
|---|---|
| Budget | From $3,800 |
| Mid-Range | From $4,500 |
| Luxury | From $6,500 |
| Ultra-Luxury | On request |
These are planning figures, not fixed rates. Final pricing depends on dates, availability, group size and the lodges you choose. Two people sharing a vehicle and guide get a better per-person rate than a solo traveler.
The biggest single cost is gorilla trekking. The international gorilla permit in Rwanda is US$1,500 per person, and the minimum age is 15. The chimpanzee trekking permit for international visitors is listed at US$150 per person. The rest comes from lodges, private transport, park fees, meals, guiding and activities. This is why two seemingly similar 7-day packages can differ widely in price.
Always confirm inclusions before booking, as luxury upgrades, domestic flights and some activities may be quoted separately.

Akagera is Rwanda’s only protected savannah region and a major conservation recovery story. It is now promoted as Rwanda’s Big Five destination. Game drives and boat safaris can show you:
No sighting can be guaranteed, even in a well-managed park. A skilled guide, good timing and patience make a real difference.
A boat safari complements the game drives by showing you Akagera from the water. Hippos are the main attraction, crocodiles rest along the shoreline, and birdwatchers can expect a strong variety of waterbirds. Late-afternoon departures are especially good for photography.
Nyungwe is Rwanda’s main destination for chimpanzee trekking and one of the largest protected montane rainforests in the region. Chimpanzees move quickly, so treks are unpredictable, lasting from about an hour to several hours. Nyungwe also offers other primates, birds and butterflies, so even the walk to the chimps is rewarding.

The canopy walkway takes you above the treetops for views over the rainforest and distant hills. It is shorter than a chimpanzee trek, but it is one of the most worthwhile optional activities on this itinerary, especially for photographers and nature lovers.
Volcanoes National Park protects part of the Virunga mountain ecosystem and is one of the world’s most famous places to see mountain gorillas.
The trek begins with a briefing, and the difficulty depends on where your assigned family is. Some treks are short, while others take several hours. Rwanda’s official guidance recommends sturdy walking shoes, waterproof clothing, long sleeves and gloves, as vegetation can include stinging nettles and trails can be wet.
It requires reasonable fitness, but difficulty varies by gorilla family and by day. Slopes can be steep and rain can make trails slippery. If you have fitness or mobility concerns, tell your planner before booking so that suitable options, including porter support, can be arranged.
Rwanda can be visited all year. The main dry season runs from June to mid-September, with another drier period from December to February. Rainy seasons run broadly from mid-February to May and from mid-September to mid-December.
Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking continue year-round, including in wet weather.
Pack in a soft bag rather than a large hard suitcase, as space in vehicles and lodges can be limited.
Yes, seven days gives you an excellent introduction to Rwanda’s wildlife, but it is an active itinerary with three parks and two long transfer days. If you prefer a slower pace, consider nine or ten days, which adds time at each stop and space for Lake Kivu, more hiking or cultural experiences.
Both countries offer outstanding gorilla and chimpanzee trekking. Rwanda’s strength is compactness: gorillas, chimpanzees and Big Five wildlife can all be combined within one week. Uganda offers a broader range of destinations, including Bwindi, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls and Kidepo, and rewards travelers with two weeks or more.
Our driver-guides work in both countries, so if you are considering a combined Rwanda and Uganda trip, you can travel with a guide who knows both.
With Iconic Africa Safaris, a private safari lets you adjust departure times, photography stops, meals and pace. With two long drive days in a seven-day route, that flexibility can be the difference between a tiring trip and a well-paced one.
Your driver-guide is the trip manager you will rely on most. Our driver-guides work in both Uganda and Rwanda and are trained professionals, some of them former park rangers, who read wildlife and local culture with real skill. They stay with you from your first airport pickup in Kigali to the final farewell on Day 7. They keep each day running smoothly and safely, from early chimpanzee starts to the long transfer days between parks.
Iconic Africa Safaris gives you three simple ways to start planning:
Tell us your travel dates, number of travelers and preferred lodge level, and we will prepare a personalized itinerary and quotation.
Prices depend on your accommodation level, group size, travel season and chosen activities. A private budget itinerary starts from around $3,800 per person, mid-range from $4,500 and luxury from $6,500, while ultra-luxury lodges are priced on request. The gorilla permit alone, at US$1,500 per person for international visitors, is a major part of the total, and the chimpanzee permit adds US$150. Two travelers sharing a vehicle and guide pay less per person than a solo traveler. Send us your dates and preferences for an accurate, personalized quotation. We confirm exactly what is included.
In Akagera we use lodges such as Rutete Eco Lodge, Akagera Game Lodge, Akagera Rhino Lodge and Ruzizi Tented Lodge. In Nyungwe, options include Chimpanze Lodge, Nyungwe Nziza Eco Lodge, Nyungwe Top Hill View Hotel, Munazi Eco-Lodge and One&Only Nyungwe House. Around Volcanoes, choices range from Kinigi Guest House and Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge to Sabyinyo Silverback, Singita Kwitonda and Bisate Lodge. Final selection depends on availability for your dates, so we confirm lodges alongside your permits. The accommodation table above lists every property by category. Ask us if you have a favorite.
Yes, and many travelers do. A popular approach is to stay in comfortable mid-range lodges in Akagera and Nyungwe, then spend more on a luxury or ultra-luxury lodge near Volcanoes National Park, where the gorilla trek is the highlight of the trip. This lets you put your budget where it matters most to you. We price each combination individually, so tell us which parks matter most and we will suggest a mix that balances comfort, location and cost across your seven days. We can also adjust the mix later.
Your private driver-guide from Iconic Africa Safaris stays with you from the first airport pickup in Kigali to the final farewell on Day 7. Our guides work in both Uganda and Rwanda and are trained professionals, some of them former park rangers, with real skill in interpreting wildlife and local culture. They handle early chimpanzee starts, long transfer days and daily logistics, keeping the trip smooth and safe. During treks, park rangers and trackers also accompany you to locate the gorillas and chimpanzees, while your guide shares knowledge along the way. You are in capable hands.
Gorilla trekking is the emotional peak of a Rwanda safari, so finishing with it keeps the energy high to the very end. Starting in Akagera also gives you gentle game drives while you settle in, before the more demanding chimpanzee and gorilla treks. Volcanoes National Park is only about two to two and a half hours from Kigali, so your last day is a short drive, which makes it easier to catch an afternoon or evening international flight. The scenic Lake Kivu route on Day 5 is a bonus. It is a fitting finale.
Yes, this itinerary is designed for exactly that. Mountain gorillas are trekked in Volcanoes National Park in northern Rwanda, while chimpanzees are tracked in Nyungwe National Park in the southwest. On this route, the chimpanzee trek takes place on Day 4 and the gorilla trek on Day 6, with a scenic transfer along Lake Kivu in between. Each trek needs its own permit, so we secure both for your dates before finalizing lodges, because permit availability fixes the structure of the whole trip. Early booking protects your preferred dates.
Nyungwe National Park in southwestern Rwanda is the main destination for chimpanzee trekking and one of the largest protected montane rainforests in the region. Tracking usually starts very early, around 5:30 a.m., and can last from about an hour to several hours depending on where the community is. Chimpanzees also live in smaller numbers in Gishwati Forest, but Nyungwe is the standard choice for visitors. The park also offers other primates, birds, butterflies and the optional canopy walkway. Wear layers, as the forest mornings are cool and damp, and bring binoculars for the birds.
Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s Big Five destination, with lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino all present following the park’s conservation recovery. Game drives and the Lake Ihema boat safari give you the best chances, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. However, wildlife is unpredictable, and leopards in particular are elusive, so no reputable operator can guarantee every species. A skilled guide, good timing and patience improve your odds, and you will also see giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, antelope and many birds. Many guests find the park exceeds expectations.
Yes. Akagera offers a completely different experience from Rwanda’s primate parks, with open savannah, woodland, wetlands and lakes. Game drives and boat safaris give you a chance to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, hippos and, with luck, lions and rhinos. It is Rwanda’s only protected savannah region and a notable conservation success story. Starting your trip here also eases you into the journey with gentle activities before the treks, and it adds real variety, so the safari is far more than a gorilla trip. Photographers especially love the light.
Expect roughly two to three hours from Kigali to Akagera, seven to eight hours from Akagera to Nyungwe, six to seven hours from Nyungwe to Volcanoes and about two to two and a half hours from Volcanoes back to Kigali. The two long days are Day 3 and Day 5. These are estimates that vary with stops, road conditions and traffic. Your guide plans comfort breaks, lunch and photo stops, and the Lake Kivu section is among the most scenic drives in Rwanda. Starting early makes the long days comfortable.
It can be demanding. Volcanoes National Park has steep slopes, thick vegetation and often muddy, slippery trails, and the trek may last from under an hour to several hours depending on where your assigned gorilla family is that day. Reasonable fitness helps, along with sturdy waterproof boots, long sleeves and gloves for stinging nettles. If you have fitness or mobility concerns, tell us before booking so we can discuss suitable options, including hiring a porter to carry your bag and offer a helping hand on difficult sections. Most healthy travelers manage well.
June to September is the most popular period because it is the main dry season, with easier trekking conditions, better roads and good visibility. December to February is another favorable window, with generally good weather, although short rains can occur. March to May is the wettest period, but the forests are very green and quieter, and trekking continues year-round. Because permits and lodges are limited and demand is strong in peak months, book well ahead if you plan to travel between June and September. Shoulder months offer more flexibility.
We advise booking several months ahead, especially for peak season from June to September, because gorilla permits are limited and lodges near Volcanoes National Park fill quickly. Permits come first, since your gorilla and chimpanzee trekking dates fix the structure of the whole itinerary and the lodge bookings that follow. If your dates are flexible, we can check permit availability and suggest the best options. Travelers booking at shorter notice may still find availability, so contact us even if your plans are close. We will do our best to help.
Yes. With an extra day or two, Lake Kivu fits naturally between Nyungwe and Volcanoes, and the route already follows the lakeshore on Day 5. Adding nights there gives you time to relax by the water, enjoy lakeside walks or boat trips, and recover after the chimpanzee trek before heading to the gorillas. It also breaks up the long transfer, making the journey less tiring. If you prefer a slower pace, a nine- or ten-day itinerary with Lake Kivu is a very good option. Many guests tell us they wish they had added it.
Yes. We can adjust the itinerary around your travel dates, fitness level, interests, lodge preferences and budget. You can replace the canopy walk with another activity, add a Kigali experience such as a craft market, art gallery or memorial visit, extend with Lake Kivu or mix lodge categories across the parks. Because the trip is private, departure times, photography stops, meals and daily pace can also be adapted. Tell us what matters most and we will prepare a personalized itinerary and quotation. Nothing is fixed until you are happy.
