3 Days in Mgahinga – Golden Monkeys and the Batwa

Mgahinga National Park is the smallest in Uganda but rich in wildlife. The park is home to golden monkeys, mountain gorillas, and over 180 bird species. You will spend one day trekking golden monkeys and another meeting the Batwa community. The Batwa were the forest’s first people, with deep traditions and unique stories. This safari is perfect for travelers who want a short but rich wildlife and cultural experience in Uganda.

Day 1: Travel to Mgahinga National Park

Iconic Africa Safaris Driver Guide will pick you up from Entebbe in the morning. The journey heads through Masaka with beautiful countryside views. The first major stop is at the Uganda Equator. Here, take photographs and learn interesting facts about this landmark. Afterward, continue to Igongo Cultural Centre in Mbarara for lunch.

While at Igongo, visit the Ankole-Kigezi Museum. You will see traditional tools, dress, and stories from western Uganda. After lunch, continue through the Kigezi Highlands. The road winds through hills, valleys, and villages, giving you more scenic views. By evening, you will arrive at Mgahinga National Park.

Day 2: Golden Monkey Trekking and Batwa Community Walk

Begin your day with an early breakfast at the lodge. Afterward, transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing. This short session explains the trekking guidelines and confirms your golden monkey permits.

With the help of armed rangers, start your golden monkey trekking experience. The trek usually lasts about three hours, including time in the forest. You will spend one full hour watching the golden monkeys. They move quickly through the bamboo forest, so keep your camera ready. Their reddish fur and playful behavior make them exciting to watch.

After the trek, head back to the lodge for lunch and some rest. Later, take a guided walk to the nearby Batwa community. The Batwa share stories, dance, and show their traditional way of life. This experience offers real insight into a culture once deeply connected to the forest.

Day 3: Return to Entebbe

Start your journey back to Entebbe early in the morning. The drive retraces the same route through the highlands and plains. You will stop along the way for bathroom breaks and lunch.
